The Ford Cortina Mk3

Britain's best-selling car, parked outside half the houses on every new estate in the country.

The Mk3 borrowed American styling and put it on a company car. The GXL with its four headlamps and vinyl roof was the one that meant you had done well.

It rusted magnificently. The sills went, the arches went, and by 1985 most of them had gone entirely.

Cost back then

£1,100

Goes for now

£5,000–£20,000 for a clean Mk3
