Ugly on purpose, with hair you could not stop touching.
A Danish woodcutter carved one for his daughter, and within five years they were on every school desk in Britain.
Thomas Dam could not afford a Christmas present so he carved a troll. By the mid-sixties they were a global craze, sold as lucky charms and clipped onto pencil cases.
The hair was the whole product. Nobody has ever picked one up without immediately running their thumb through it.
