Britain's answer to Barbie, in sensible knitwear.

Sindy

Launched by Pedigree as the girl next door: flat shoes, duffle coat, and outfits your gran could knit.

Sindy outsold Barbie in Britain for years precisely because she was not glamorous. The clothes were things real teenagers wore.

The horse, the bedroom set and the scooter were the aspirational items, and the whole lot was in the Christmas catalogue with a ring drawn round it in biro.
