Argos opened in 1973, built directly on the Green Shield Stamps catalogue business, and invented a very British way to shop.
You looked it up in the laminated catalogue, wrote the number on a slip with a tiny pen, queued, paid, then waited for your name on the board.
Everybody has stood in an Argos watching a screen, willing their number to come up, while somebody else's trampoline came down the chute.
