You swung them until they clacked top and bottom. Then they shattered, and that was the end of clackers.
The noise was extraordinary. A playground of thirty children with clackers sounded like a hailstorm on a greenhouse. Bruised wrists were a badge of honour.
Early versions were made of hardened acrylic that could splinter under repeated impact. Schools banned them, then the shops stopped stocking them, and a craze died in about eighteen months.
