Woolworths was the shop for pick 'n' mix, singles, school uniform and Ladybird clothes. When it went, a lot of towns lost their anchor.
The closing-down sales in December 2008 were genuinely grim: shelves stripped, then the fittings sold, then the shopfront covered.
