The Smoking Ban
The day pubs suddenly smelled of everything else.
Smoking in enclosed public places was banned in England in July 2007, and the British pub changed overnight.
The immediate, universally reported consequence was that everyone discovered what pubs actually smelled like underneath the smoke, and it was worse.
Beer gardens, patio heaters and the outdoor smoking shelter all date from this exact moment.
