Saturday night television stopped for the draw, presented live, with Noel Edmonds and a machine called Guinevere.
The first draw had 22 million viewers. Families had their numbers and checked them religiously, and everyone knew somebody whose regular numbers came up the week they forgot to buy a ticket.
The machines had names. Arthur, Guinevere, Lancelot, Merlin, Galahad. People had opinions about which machine was luckiest, which is not how probability works.
